Buckhannon City Council Advances Proposal Limiting New Vape, Smoke Shops Near Schools and Parks

BUCKHANNON — Buckhannon city officials have taken the first step toward tightening local regulations on vape and tobacco retailers, advancing a proposal aimed at limiting where new shops can operate.

The ordinance, introduced by the Tobacco Prevention Coalition, would prohibit the establishment of new vape and smoke shops within 1,500 feet of schools, parks, churches, libraries and other designated community spaces. Supporters say the measure is intended to reduce youth exposure to dangerous products alongside tobacco and nicotine.

During a recent meeting, the Buckhannon City Council voted unanimously to refer the proposed ordinance to the city’s planning commission for further evaluation. The commission is expected to review the measure’s potential impact and offer recommendations before it returns to council for possible final action.
